ANKAHEE - Film Review

Shekhar [Aftab Shivdasani] is married to Nandita [Amisha Patel]. The relationship only gets better with the birth of a girl, Sheena. Everything seems perfect. Till Miss World and Bollywood star Kavya Krishna [Esha Deol] walks into his hospitalKavya is beautiful. Like the rest of the world, Shekhar falls in love with her. For Kavya, Shekhar is the lifeline. Her anchor. The only person in the world who can make her happy. And Kavya wants, needs, struggles to be happy.Nandita, of course, is stuck in the middle. Shekhar is her husband. The only man she has ever loved. And yet, he finds it only too easy to walk away. From her. From their home. From Sheena. If ANKAHEE is autobiographical by nature, purportedly based on Vikram Bhatt's life, then you've got to give it to the director for accepting the blame for the failed relationship. In fact, Aftab actually emerges as the culprit for the failed marriage, walking out on his wife and kid, smitten by a beauty queen who seems overtly possessive of him.

SC issues notice to Centre on reservation issue

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre questioning the basis on which a policy decision to implement 20 per cent reservation was taken. A vacation bench comprising Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice LS Panta appealed to the agitating students to give up their strike since the apex court has decided to examine the entire issue.
The Bench while issuing notices to the concerned ministries asked them to explain the modalities to be adopted for the implementation of the policy. The court sought the response from the government on how it would deal with the matter and the basis for identifying the OBCs, besides the rationale for adoption of norms. The court granted eight weeks to the government to file counter-affidavit on implementation of the policy.
The court said it will examine the effect of the policy's implementation which the petitioner said will result in division of the country on the basis of caste. "These questions have serious social and political ramifications and this court will deal with it appropriately," it said. The court was hearing two petitions on the issue filed by Shiv Khera and another by advocate Ashok Kumar Thakur.

WestIndies Thrashed India !!

The West Indies gave captain Brian Lara a winning send-off in his final one-day international at his home ground in Trinidad, beating India by 19 runs. The win completed an impressive 4-1 series win over India.Lara made 36 before getting run out, but Chris Gayle (51), Ramnaresh Sarwan (52) and Dwayne Bravo (62 not out) ensured the West Indies reached 255-6.Virender Sehwag hit 95 but got little help as India lost six wickets for 66 and were all out for 236 off 48 overs.Opener Sehwag's 95 off 103 deliveries put his side in charge but an aggressive spell from Jerome Taylor swung the momentum back to the West Indies. He dismissed Sehwag, Mohammad Kaif and Suresh Raina in the space of four overs and Lara then turned to spinners Dave Mohammed and Chris Gayle to wrap up the last three wickets for just six runs. The Windies innings got off to the worse start imaginable, with opener Sewnarine Chattergoon finding himself bowled by Ajit Agarkar with his first ball.Lara hit Harbhajan for a straight six but was run out after slipping.Gayle hit 10 fours in 51 and other fifties from Sarwan and Bravo boosted the total.

Rehan Qardi is a local tour guide with a keen interest for poetry, which he uses to woo his women, always to success. He is a happy-go-lucky guy who believes in enjoying life to the fullest, and not getting tied down to any place or anybody.

And then he meets Zooni.

Zooni, who makes him feel things he has never felt before. She touches the true Rehan, and that is the problem. He knows he cannot let Zooni know the whole truth about himself. What he fears the most is that her being a part of his life can destroy her.

Kajol as Zooni Ali Beg

Zooni Ali Beg is a beautiful blind girl who is full of spirit. She wants to discover life for herself and isn’t going to let her handicap stop her. She is leaving home on her own for the first time and wants to make the most of it.

During this trip she discovers Rehan, who seems to understand her better than anyone has before. It is so refreshing for her to find someone who sees past her blindness and looks into her soul. She knows she will cherish every moment that she has spent with him.

But to her disbelief she discovers unfathomable things about Rehan which will change her life forever. She now has to make the hardest choice of her life.

Storyline

Choices... to choose between right or wrong is simple, but what defines one’s life is the decision between the greater of two goods or the lesser of two evils. This is the advice that Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol) a blind Kashmiri girl, receives from her father just as she is about to venture out into the world on her own for the very first time. Little does she know that these very words will shape her life!

Zooni meets Rehan Qadri (Aamir Khan), a local tour guide and an incorrigible flirt, who goes from city to city exploring their architecture as also the women. Her friends warn her against this good-for-nothing roadside Romeo, but she chooses to ignore them. She is not the one to be protected. It is now her time to discover life, and love. Is this really the right choice?

Rehan is fascinated by Zooni. He truly wants her to see life as it should be seen, in its many colors – and as he promises her, the time spent with him will be the most precious in all her life. Zooni sees Delhi, life and love like she never has before, because of Rehan.

What Zooni doesn’t know is that Rehan has another side of his life that he has kept from her – something that can not only change her life, but can also destroy it.

Fanaa... destroyed in love...

I spoke for poor farmers, no apologies: Aamir

Aamir Khan said Thursday that he will not apologise for 'speaking for poor farmers' affected by the Narmada dam project and criticised Gujarat's Govt dicision not to show his latest film 'Fanaa' in the state.

'Fanaa', set for a worldwide release Friday, will not be screened in Gujarat as the state's multiplex and cinema owners decided against releasing the film after a boycott call given by the youth wing of the BJP and supported by the opposition Congress.

'I have never commented on the construction of the dam in particular. I want that Gujarat and its neighbouring states receive more water. But at the same time, I also want that all those farmers who have lost their land (due to the dam project) should be rehabilitated first.

'If the political party thinks that banning my film is the right decision, they can go ahead with it. I love the people of the Gujarat and I will feel bad for them because they will not get to see my film.'

He appealed to the people of the state to come forward and join hands with him.

Da Vinci Code hauls in $224 m worldwide

Moviegoers gave their blessing to The Da Vinci Code over the weekend, spending an estimated $77 million to see the Tom Hanks religious thriller. While the film didn't set a domestic box office record, it was the largest weekend opening of the year so far and became the second largest worldwide release after Star Wars: Episode III. It garnered some $224 million worldwide.

The total box office was down about 2.8 percent from the same weekend last year, according to studio estimates released Sunday. But that's a tough comparison given that last year's numbers included the record-setting debut of Star Wars: Episode III.The film received mixed reviews and protesters picketed outside a number of theaters, upset over the story's suggestion that Jesus Christ was married and had a child. But the controversy did little to deter moviegoers, who packed theaters in almost every country the film debuted.

The animated film Over the Hedge had a strong showing with its $37.2 million as part of a counter-programming strategy from distributor Paramount Pictures. The Tom Cruise action film Mission: Impossible III crossed the $100 million mark in its third weekend with a total domestic box office take of $103 million.

Doctors go on strike after anti-quota rally

Back on the streets with their anti-quota agitation, students of five premier medical colleges in Delhi clashed with police, and Indian Medical Association (IMA), in a show of solidarity, asked its members to go on a 24-hour strike immediately and called a bandh on May 15.
Demanding an assurance from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to halt implementation of reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions, the students gathered in Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) and marched towards the PMO.
The students marched through the busy Connaught Place area, creating huge traffic snarls. They were stopped by the police near India Gate triggering a clash. The police used water cannon and lobbed teargas shells at the nearly thousand protestors.

Konkana plays a prostitute

They made a great onscreen couple in Rajat Kapoor's Mixed Doubles though they didn't get as much recognition since it was a low-budget movie. Perhaps Madhur Bhandarkar can get them their due credits as an interesting onscreen couple. Bhandarkar has signed up Ranvir Shorey and Konkana Sen Sharma together again for his next film Traffic Signal.Konkana will play the role of a prostitute in the film while Ranvir plays a junkie. This is for the first time that Konkana will be playing a prostitute in a film. Although it is just a four day cameo, Konkana feels that the role is extremely challenging. Besides the offer came from Madhur Bhandarkar who already directed her in the National Award winning Page 3, so there was no way she could turn it down, says Konkana. In addition to Konkana and Ranvir, the film Traffic Signal also stars Kunal Khemu and Neetu Chandra.

Hike petrol price by Rs 10, LPG by Rs 114: Ministry

The petroleum ministry on Wednesday made out a strong case for increasing the fuel prices by up to Rs 10.43 a litre in petrol and Rs 114.45 per cylinder of cooking gas to save oil companies from a massive financial loss with the Left parties opposing the move.
They instead suggested cut in duties and CNG pricing policy to mitigate the surging international oil prices.
In a presentation to Left leaders including Sitaram Yechury of CPM and Gurudas Dasgupta, the oil ministry said prices of petrol need to raised by Rs 9.33 per litre, diesel by Rs 10.43 per litre, kerosene by Rs 17.16 per litre and LPG by Rs 114.45 per cylinder if prices are to be brought in parity with imported costs.
The oil ministry said without the price hike, oil companies would suffer a revenue loss of Rs 73,512 crore (Rs 735.12 billion) in 2006-07 fiscal.
Sources said Left leaders wanted customs duty to be halved and a specific excise duty levied on products.

Two movies on Daniel Pearl

The life of murdered Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl (right) is the subject of two Hollywood movies in the pipeline.
Pearl was kidnapped in Karachi in January 2002 and beheaded by a terrorist group that called itself The National Movement for the Restoration of Pakistani Sovereignty.
The first movie is based on French author Bernard-Henri Levy's book Who Killed Dani+el Pearl? in which Levy describes his investigations in Pakistan that lead him to conclude that Pearl was actually killed because he uncovered a nexus between the Pakistani Inter Service Intelligence, ISI, agency and Al Qaeda.
Produced by Beacon Pictures and directed by Kip Willams, the as-yet-untitled movie will star Josh Lucas (left) as Pearl, reports the movie trade magazine Variety.
Pearl's character has been fictionalised and Levy has been changed into an American television presenter who gets his hands dirty looking for an answer to why Pearl was killed.
The reason for the fictionalisation is that the movie-makers did not want a clash with the other film being made on Pearl's life, based on the book by his widow Marianne Pearl, A Mighty Heart.
Brad Pitt has bought the rights to that movie, according to The New York Times.

Saif opts out of Qurbani remake

Saif Ali Khan has chosen to walk out of Feroz Khan’s remake of the 1980’s hit 'Qurbani'.The original movie revolved around the life of two friends, played by Feroz Khan and Vinod Khanna. Saif was to play the role of Vinod Khanna in the remake.
According to sources, Saif apparently opted out of the film because of some date problems. Saif has dates only after May 2007, while Feroz Khan has planned to start the film this year itself. Fardeen Khan will be seen playing the part of Feroz Khan in the remake.
Besides it seems like Khan Senior just can’t resist the temptation of facing the camera. Apparently, Feroz Khan will also star in the Qurbani remake, but this time, he will play the role of a police inspector in the film, the role which was originally played by Amjad Khan.
